This is a question I often get from people who find out I have a blog but then notice I haven’t posted in a while. If you are a writer you write, and most of my posts are about life experiences that help me be a better husband, father and leader. The last few months however have been less about me and more about my wife Courtney. For family and friends they know I have been busy helping her launch her business: a micro-bakery rooted in our multi-cultural family favorite recipes named Legacy Baking Company.
This is an exciting time for the Marques Five as our family learns and grows together during this new season of our lives. These lessons are worth sharing with others as we continue in this adventure!
Lesson #1 – Don’t give up on your dreams
As a wife and mom, Courtney has always played the part of family supporter lifting us up constantly. Often her support would come in the form of wonderful baked goods that would welcome each of us home. At heart she has always been a baker but it was more focused on serving us. Now is our time to be by her side and help her use her God-given talents. Seeing her jump on this endeavor has been a beautiful experience.
The coolest part in all of this is how this dream never died down over the years and is now flourishing into something beautiful.
Lesson #2 – We all play a part and we all can help
My biggest excitement when Courtney started Legacy Baking Company was on how I would be able to help. While this is my wife I am fully invested, my role was not as co-owner or co-founder. My role is simple: I am a helper. Whether that is flexing my design skills in creating the logo, or being the accountant reviewing our expenses, I am just ready to help where needed.
The same is true for our children as they have each helped in their own way. While our oldest has fulfilled deliveries, our middle son has helped with packaging, and our little girl is learning the recipes and helped with some of the baking herself.
Lesson #3 – Success can be defined in different ways
I think the most important lesson we’ve learned as a family is that success can be defined in different ways. Ultimately we’ve experienced success in the journey itself. After 5 months officially in business we’ve seen that starting something requires commitment, hard work and continued belief in yourself and the purpose you have.
