There is a place in Portugal that recently became famous for something that locals have always known existed. In the last decade the small town of Nazare has received athletes from all over the world who come to surf the large waves that hit their north beach. As a little boy I visited Nazare and as most of my country men my focus was on the more glamorous terrain of the south side of town. I recently had a chance of visiting Nazare as I took my wife and children to spend the last afternoon of 2024 and be mesmerized by a beautiful sunset that welcomed the new year. As we walked through the beach I could only imagine the idea of getting in the water when the waves stretch 100 feet high into the sky. The ability to take on such a challenge made me think of a word that has been echoing in my head for the last few months: COURAGE!
This is the word that I believe God has placed in my heart for the new year. I believe it carries a meaning that I have yet to understand fully but for which I am certain will bring growth in 2025.

What is courage?
The dictionary describes courage as “a mental or moral strength to venture, preserve, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Other descriptions frame courage as the ability to make the right decisions even if it means you lose something in the process. Part of this meaning is rooted in the origin of the word courage that comes from the Latin word cor, which means “heart.” From the heart courage is reflected in vulnerable actions that move you forward with peace and confidence.
In many ways the word courage is a continuation of a path that I have been going on for years. I feel like I have been here before but maybe it was more of an internal strength I needed to fulfill first before I could experience it fully. This same path brought me to a place of hope last year which I believe is giving me permission to act boldly, with confidence in the new year.
Here is why I believe COURAGE will have a positive impact in my life in the new year.
Personally…
As a family man I want to stand strong for my wife and kids, and show courage beyond the physical aspect of strength. Real strength means I am vulnerable with them and move into places that allow them to share deeply without fear.
Professionally…
As someone driven to continue to grow in my career the word courage reflects the need to be more comfortable with being uncomfortable. To me this means being open to more risk when wanting to succeed.
Spiritually…
As a Christ-follower courage means I am unapologetic about my beliefs. Jesus is my savior and my words and actions should make it real for anyone that knows me.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9
